We can help

Supportive Services

We offer support and hope through our network of families.

Membership

If you would like to become a member of Hearts of Hope, please complete our online membership application form. Membership is not limited to Michigan residents. We welcome all families affected by congenital heart defects and parents expecting a child with a heart defect. All members will receive our online E-newsletter which will provide notice of fundraisers, awareness projects such as our annual CHD awareness event in February and also our yearly Fall Event. Upon request, we will use our parent matching services to put you in touch with a family whose child shares a similar diagnosis.

Once we have received your completed membership form, we will mail you a membership packet  that contains helpful information about our local hospitals, therapy services, phone numbers and CHD facts. You will also receive helpful tips and ideas given by families whose children have gone through open-heart surgery.

Please be sure to check us out on Facebook where you’ll be able to post questions and photos, receive tips, and provide support.

We also encourage you to share a photo and story of your child for our story of hope section.

Parent Matching Services

We can facilitate you in finding another family of a child born with the same or similar congenital heart defect. You can share stories, experiences and draw support from other families that have gone through a similar situation. When you sign up online for membership, simply indicate whether you would like to be a part of our parent matching program.

Parent to Parent Help

We currently provide a special tips page for newly diagnosed families, mothers, and fathers. If you would like to contribute a tip or share your story, please contact us. Be sure to take a moment to read the inspirational words of Hearts of Hope member and fellow heart mom, Stephanie Husted, as she has written numerous poems describing her journey with her son Braeden (HLHS).

Resources

While Hearts of Hope does not provide medical advice, we do provide general information regarding CHD facts and CHD types. We recommend that you speak with your cardiologist and care team for specific instructions and recommendations regarding your child’s particular congenital heart defect.

Carebags

Hearts of Hope provides carebags to children at U of M Mott Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Detroit who have gone through an open heart surgery. Our carebags currently contain a “My Heart Rocks” comfort pillow that can be used during a hospital stay. The bags also contain a “Froggy Goes to the Doctor” book, a stuffed frog, notebook/pen, water bottle, and an insulated bag.

If your child has recently gone through an open heart surgery and you would like a carebag, please email colleen@heartsofhopemi.org.

Love from Lindsay Baskets

Love from Lindsay Baskets were created specifically for "heart babies" and to give their families a sense of normalcy when things certainly are not. These little gifts are for the infants that have a congenital heart defect of some sort and require surgical repair in order for survival. These baskets are primarily delivered to the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Intensive Care unit at CS Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan. Created in memory of Lindsay Dean, these baskets have been made possible by the generous donations of family and friends and with the backing of Hearts of Hope. To donate to the cause, please mail donations to: Love from Lindsay Baskets 510 Hamilton Rd Parchment, MI 49004

Contents of the baskets include:

  • snap across onesie t-shirts (so that tubes and monitor cords can be accessible) I include two per basket
  • 6-8 inch stuffed toy (some would assist in propping up ventilator tubes and keeping a pacifier from popping out)
  • pacifiers (package of 2 works perfect!)
  • pacifier holder (so that pacifier doesn't fall to the ground. It can be clipped to the t-shirt or a blanket)
  • receiving blankets (for bundling or just for a prettier background for a photo than a regular hospital blanket) Nurses LOVE to change these!  Two are included in each basket.
  • warm socks to keep those piggies warm! These kids have very poor circulation to their extremities. 2 pair per basket.
  • precious bows for the girls and darling caps for the boys
  • a special note about Lindsay!

Lily's Legacy

Lily was born on November 30, 2006 with HLHS. We unfortunately only had a very short time with her before she went to Heaven to be with her maker on April 27, 2007.

However, her short life impacted us in ways words cannot describe and she lives on in our hearts every single day until we meet again.

In her honor and memory we have decided to carry on her legacy with Hearts of Hope and through the Scrapbooking fundraiser that we hold every March. This year as funds are available, we are able to donate Meijer Gift Cards to both Detroit Children's and C.S. Mott Children's Hospitals for the families affected by CHD's.
